Patrícia Roque Martins is an Assistant Researcher at the Art History Institute of the NOVA University of Lisbon where she develops the project Dis-ability narratives: how to (not) explore the otherness in museums and exhibitions? Building up an insight towards improving cultural imaginaries around disabled people, with the founding of FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Between 2015-2021 she was an Integrated Researcher at CITCEM – Transdisciplinary Research Centre Culture, Space and Memory at the University of Porto, where she developed the project The Representation of Disabilities in Museum Collections of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC): discourse, identity and sense of belonging, with an individual post-doctoral grant from FCT.
She holds a PhD in Fine Arts, with a specialisation in Museology (2015), a Master in Museology and Museography (2008) and a degree in History, Art History variant (2001) by the University of Lisbon, Portugal. She was a guest speaker at several scientific events in Portugal and Brazil in the area of accessibility and disability in museums. She published the book Museums (In) Capacitantes. Deficiência, Acessibilidades e Inclusão em Museus de Arte (DGPC-Caleidóscopio, 2017), as well as several articles of the specialty in international journals with peer review.
Currently, she is a member of the American international network The Inclusive Museum Research Network and the European international network Europeana Network Association.
Josélia Neves has a degree in Modern Languages and Literatures, an MA in English Studies, a PhD in Translation Studies, with a dissertation on Subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (SDH) by the University of Roehampton, London. In her career as a university teacher and researcher, she has led a number of collaborative projects in various fields – television, the cinema and DVD, tourism, museums and cultural venues, publishing, the performing arts and education – in an effort to provide access to persons with disabilities.
Her expertise is in Subtitling, Captioning, Audio Description, Audio-tactile Transcreation and in Multisensory Communication and Cultural Mediation. From 2014 to 2023, she was a Professor at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hamad bin Khalifa University, in Qatar and is a member of TransMedia Research Group.
Josélia Neves believes that accessibility is a right and an opportunity, requiring creativity and innovation, as well as mobilising in-depth knowledge of the culture and the people it serves.
